The Malayali community in UK has been shocked by the news of unexpected sudden demise of a young ayurvedic doctor Anand Narayanan Nair (33) at Eastham in London, who hail from Tripunithura, Kerala on January 4, 2025 after battling with liver disease at King’s College Hospital, London. Anand had come to the UK on a student visa with his wife Haritha, also an ayurvedic doctor, who worked as a carer. The couple had already been under immense mental and financial stress after Anand’s mother suffered a heart attack back in India.

Anand’s unexpected death has left Haritha, who was unconscious in the hospital due to the trauma, in a dire situation. The family has no income, mounting debts of around Rs. 35 lakhs in India and Anand’s parents are in poor health. The appeal for Anand’s family has already raised over £8,000 so far. The appeal is officially concluded but the donation link will remain open to accommodate contributions from supporting organizations.
Another urgent appeal was launched on January 5, 2025 for Bijo Mathew and his family from Thodupuzha, Kerala, India. Bijo, who had been working normally and was healthy otherwise suffered a severe brain bleed on December 3 leaving him partially paralyzed. He has been hospitalized for over a month requiring extensive treatment and rehabilitation.
Bijo’s wife, Swapna, employed as a carer, had to take unpaid leave to care for Bijo and their two young children, aged eight and three. Now, she has resumed back to her work due to the impending financial situation while her husband is admitted into the hospital. The family, who relocated to the UK a year ago with significant financial sacrifices including mortgaging their only property and pawning gold jewellery etc are now struggling to meet basic living expenses.
