The extensive damages are still being accounted and the recovery operations are going on even after few days of the devastated landslides which struck the mountain villages of Mundakkai and Churalmala in the early hours of Tuesday 30th July at Wayanad district of Kerala, South India. Since the Malayali community in the UK  hailed from the home state of Kerala, the trustees decided to go for an emergency appeal without any loss of time to support the affected people. Even though it has not decided specifically to support a certain project, appropriate decision will take in due course accordingly afterwards since the full scale of damages are yet to come out. The raised funds may be used for rehabilitation purposes for the families, who lost their dear and near ones, houses and all their assets including the cash and crops. The eyewitnesses statement of  the tragedy is heartbreaking as the survivors witnessed themselves helplessly watching their family members washed off in the terrible landslide.

Many people are missing and the rescue operations are still undergoing while we issue the appeal as numbers of human remains are recovering from the debris. The natural disaster struck in such an unimaginable scale that the Indian army has been called in to assist the rescue operations as many inhabitants of the village is still unaccountable as the dead bodies had been found kilometres away in rivers due to powerful landslide. The army had to erect a temporary bridge to connect the isolated Mundakkai village as the bridge was destroyed in the backlash of the floods.  It has been reported as the largest landslide as Kerala State  ever  has seen in the history. Killed over 500 as per the available latest report  and almost three villages in Wayanad District known as Mundakai, Chooralmala and Mepady are washed off completely leaving the fertile land left with just muds and rocks.

BMCF trustees took an immediate decision to issue an emergency appeal and further course of action including the distribution of funds will be decided later once the full scale of casualties /damages made available.

The trustees urged everyone to come together to support theiy fraternity in Kerala same like they did during 2018 Kerala floods appeal as an overwhelming amount of Rs. 88.00 lakhs raised and given to the Govt. of Kerala for rehabilitation purposes.
