British Malayali readers rally to support her husband and young daughter as the family faces grief and financial hardship

The British Malayali community has come together to support the family of Reshma Rajan, a 32-year-old woman from Sultan Bathery, Wayanad, Kerala, who tragically passed away following an unexpected medical emergency in Liverpool.

A total of £11,650 has been raised for Reshma’s family through an appeal organised with the support of British Malayali readers and generous well-wishers. The funds will help with the costs associated with bringing her body back to India and provide financial assistance to her grieving husband, Sreerag, and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

The fundraising total comprised £9,357 received through KindLink, £964 in Gift Aid and £964 through bank transfers. After deducting the KindLink fee of £327 and adding £38 from the foundation’s general fund, the final amount reached £11,650.

A young mother’s life cut tragically short

Originally from Sultan Bathery in Wayanad, Reshma had completed postgraduate studies in engineering and had come to the UK with her husband, Sreerag, and their young daughter to build a better future.

The family had made significant financial sacrifices to pursue their ambitions. They had borrowed more than £20,000 to fund their higher education and move to the UK, and a substantial portion of the debt remained outstanding.

Their hopes of building a secure future were shattered when Reshma suddenly developed severe abdominal pain. She was admitted to Liverpool Royal University Hospital for treatment to remove gallstones.

Her family and loved ones had hoped she would recover and return home. Instead, her unexpected death left them devastated. At just 32, Reshma passed away, leaving behind her husband and a little daughter who was only two and a half years old.

The tragedy has been particularly heartbreaking because her daughter is still at an age when she needs her mother’s love, care and affection every day.

A family facing grief and financial uncertainty

Reshma and Sreerag came from financially disadvantaged backgrounds and had taken on substantial debt to pursue higher education and establish their lives in the UK. Their families in India also face financial challenges, with relatives relying on daily-wage employment to make ends meet.

Reshma’s sudden death has therefore brought both profound emotional pain and serious financial uncertainty. Alongside coping with the loss of his wife, Sreerag must now care for their young daughter while facing outstanding debts and the costs associated with repatriating her body.

In response to the family’s desperate circumstances, an appeal was launched to help bring Reshma home to India, ease the immediate financial burden and offer some support towards her daughter’s future.

British Malayali community stands together

The generous response from British Malayali readers and other compassionate donors has raised £11,650 for the family. Their support offers a measure of relief at a time when the family is struggling to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

Every contribution represents a gesture of solidarity with Sreerag and his young daughter as they face an uncertain future without Reshma.

The appeal highlights the power of community support in times of tragedy and the willingness of people to stand beside families when they need help the most.

For Reshma’s family, the kindness of the British Malayali community will be remembered as a source of comfort during one of the darkest periods of their lives.
